7 Sept Fri.

We had filled out a delivery form last night for one full breakfast and at seven a large tray of yogurt, eggs, tomatoes, toast, etc arrived. We’re finally learning how much Aussies eat, and even “breakie” for one was more than we needed. Left at 7:30 and returned to Nourlangie Rock and immediately picked up three life birds: Leaden Flycatcher, Grey Whistler and Horsefield’s Bronze Cuckoo. We took a hike that weaves up and around craggy outcroppings and saw many terrific cave paintings of Lightening Man, Rainbow Woman, kangaroos and barramundi and elongated men and women. We walked around a large billabong (pond) full of pelicans, jabiru, geese, and, supposedly, large crocs. The famous Aussie flies were out in force, also. They’re like our Oak Flies, only much more numerous. Tiny, non-biting, but very persistent about climbing inside your nose, mouth and eyes. I’d sent for a special fly net, which worked pretty well, and Bob tried to beat them off himself with some twigs.

We drove 40 km further south to check out the Yellow Water River Cruise which is good for birds if you arrive at 6 am for the first cruise, but when we saw three large boats packed with people chugging up to the landing we decided to pass and dashed back to the café bar and ordered a barramundi burger and beer just beating out the arriving hoards from the boats.

It was really hot so we headed to the Park Visitors’ Center and looked at all the very good exhibits and watched a movie on life in the Kakadu in the cool indoors.

Back to the Croc for laundry, frustrating hotel internet, dinner of great mushroom soup and a split order of steak.
